Pakistan’s net metering contribution to total electricity generation rose by 57 basis points year-on-year in September 2025.
Rooftop solar adoption in Pakistan continues to grow as more consumers shift away from relying solely on the national grid. According to NEPRA data compiled by Arif Habib Limited, net metering units increased by 28.1 percent in September compared to the previous month. This growth reflects strong seasonal solar generation and rising installation of solar systems among both domestic and commercial users.
The data shows that total electricity generation rose by 0.8 percent year-on-year in September. This indicates that many consumers are turning to self-generation options to manage their electricity costs amid high tariffs. The increase in rooftop solar adoption also highlights the growing awareness of renewable energy solutions and their long-term financial benefits.
Experts note that net metering allows consumers to generate their own electricity while remaining connected to the grid. Excess energy produced by solar panels can be fed back into the grid, helping households and businesses offset their energy bills. This system has become more popular as electricity prices continue to rise, and consumers seek reliable and cost-effective alternatives.
Analysts predict that the trend toward solar adoption will continue, particularly in urban and industrial areas where energy demand is high. Policymakers are also encouraging the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure, providing incentives for solar installation and reducing barriers for consumers.
The growing interest in rooftop solar not only reduces dependency on the national grid but also contributes to energy sustainability and environmental benefits by lowering carbon emissions. As more households and businesses invest in solar solutions, the energy landscape in Pakistan is gradually shifting toward cleaner, decentralized generation. This steady rise in net metering units demonstrates that solar energy is becoming a practical and economically viable option for many Pakistanis.
