Starting from January 1 Pakistan has taken on its duties as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the eighth time.
Pakistan will take on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in July 2025, as reported by international media. The country will also participate in the UNSC committee that handles sanctions against groups such as ISIS (Daesh) and Al-Qaeda.
In June 2024, Pakistan was elected by 182 out of 193 UN General Assembly members to one of the two Asia-Pacific non-permanent seats on the UNSC for the next two years. This marks Pakistan’s eighth term in this crucial role.
While the permanent members of the Security Council hold veto power, non-permanent members like Pakistan play a significant role in decision-making, as the Council’s resolutions are often reached through consensus. This position enables Pakistan to actively contribute to global discussions and actions on major international issues.
Pakistan’s seat in the Security Council provides it the opportunity to influence decisions on urgent issues such as the ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Afghanistan, Syria, and Lebanon. Through this membership, Pakistan will be able to take an active role in addressing these critical global challenges.
