LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Sunday reacted a notification on social media claiming party president Nawaz Sharif has resigned from his psosition.
In a tweet, party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb issued a one-word response to the notification calling it “fake.”
The paper dated August 2, 2024 claimed Nawaz Sharif had resigned from his position as senior president of PML-N. It added that the party after consultation had accepted the resignation.
The fake notification also bore signatures of senior government minister and key party member Ahsan Iqbal.
Sharif had been elected unopposed as the PML-N president on May 28 following a six-year absence from the country’s political scene. His younger brother and incumbent Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif voluntarily stepped down from party position in favor of his brother.
The PML-N Central Working Committee (CWC) convened on May 18 under Article 15 of the party constitution, and Nawaz Sharif’s presidency was ratified by the General Council on May 28.
The former statesman had previously been removed from the party presidency due to a Supreme Court ruling in the Panama Papers case.
