The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has attributed internet slowdown in Pakistan to issues with telecom infrastructure, following prior concerns over Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Official documents show that the Web Management System (WMS), in operation for 18 years, handles grey traffic but does not influence internet speed.
The PTA also revealed that 42% of telecom sites across the country lack generators, leaving over 21,000 sites exposed to power outages. While 24,885 sites are equipped with generators, many lack adequate backup power, causing interruptions during load-shedding periods.
Security concerns also play a critical role in the telecom slowdown. Over the last few years, more than 739 telecom sites have been targeted by thieves, resulting in stolen generators and essential equipment. Moreover, 147 sites have been attacked by terrorists in the past five years, further disrupting telecom services.
Regarding international connectivity, PTA confirmed that previous faults in submarine cables have been resolved. A new initiative by Transworld, which involves laying a 45,000-kilometer cable connecting Pakistan to 33 countries in Africa and the Middle East, is set to improve internet speed and bandwidth. With a capacity of 18 terabits per second, this project will enhance Pakistan’s global connectivity significantly.
The Ministry of IT and PTA are collaborating with telecom operators and social media platforms to address these issues and improve internet services across the country, with long-term solutions in development to strengthen telecom infrastructure.
