The Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Green Line service will remain suspended in the port city on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram due to security concerns, a spokesperson disclosed on Friday.
On the 8th of Muharram, five routes will be partially affected. This temporary closure is being done to ensure the safety of citizens during the religious processions. At the same time, Karachi Traffic Police have shared a traffic diversion plan to help people move around the city more easily during Muharram. According to the traffic plan, M.A. Jinnah Road will stay closed from Guru Mandir to Tower on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram.
Authorities have given alternate routes for commuters. People coming from Nazimabad should take Lasbela Chowk through the Garden area to reach Nishtar Park. Those coming from Liaquatabad should turn right at Teen Hatti and use Martin Road. Travelers from Hassan Square to PP Chowrangi can take Kashmir Road under the Jail Flyover or use Shahrah-e-Quaideen through Society Light Signal. Another option is to use the Jail Flyover to reach Teen Hatti and Nishtar Road via Lasbela Chowk. A day earlier, the federal government announced public holidays on July 5 and 6 for the 9th and 10th of Muharram to observe Youm-e-Ashura.
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam. On the 10th of Muharram, also known as Ashura, people remember the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his family in Karbala. Special religious gatherings and processions will be held nationwide under tight security.
