The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed grave concern over a severe shortage of essential medicines for cardiac and hepatitis treatment, describing the situation as a humanitarian crisis.
This shortage, particularly affecting Punjab and Sindh, poses significant risks to patients’ lives with complaints escalating from healthcare providers and patients nationwide. As a result of the unavailability of life-saving drugs treatments have been delayed leading to increased complications and fatalities.
Underprivileged patients are disproportionately affected, further exposing inequalities in healthcare access. In response, the PMA has strongly criticized the government’s inaction and called for immediate measures to address the issue.
Furthermore, the association has urged a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the shortages. It has also recommended implementing reforms to strengthen drug regulation and ensure a consistent supply of essential medicines.
To alleviate the crisis, the PMA emphasized the need for transparent procurement processes and equitable distribution of medicines across all regions. Healthcare experts underline that swift action is crucial to prevent further loss of life and restore public confidence in the healthcare system.
The PMA has insisted that authorities prioritize resolving this crisis asserting that continued negligence in addressing such a critical issue is unacceptable.
