The smog situation in Punjab continued to aggravate after the air quality index (AQI) reading in Multan crossed the 2,000-mark on Friday.
Punjab’s air quality has reached hazardous levels, prompting the provincial government to take drastic measures.
Multan recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 2,135, far exceeding the safe limit. The PM2.5 concentration in the air was also dangerously high, at 947 micrograms per cubic meter, which is 189 times the recommended limit by the WHO.
The smog situation in Multan and surrounding districts, including Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh, and Khanewal, has led to poor visibility on roads.
To combat the worsening pollution, the provincial government has closed parks, museums, and other public spaces until November 17.
Schools in 18 districts, including Multan, have been shut, and markets are now required to close by 8pm. Traffic police have been ordered to act against vehicles emitting smoke, and authorities are cracking down on illegal stubble burning.
The government also attributed the crisis to winds from India, particularly from the Bikaner and Jaipur regions, which have worsened smog in southern Punjab.
In response, measures have been introduced to reduce pollution, such as seizing vehicles and imposing fines for environmental violations. Meanwhile, the public is urged to stay indoors, especially children, for safety.
