The Technical Committee on Air Quality, under the Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA), has approved a new Air Quality Forecasting Model, describing it as a major step in improving pollution monitoring and control.
Punjab Environmental Protection Agency has approved a new air quality forecasting model aimed at improving short-term predictions of pollution levels across the province. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by EPA Punjab Director General Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, where experts reviewed the system’s ability to provide accurate forecasts and support timely action against rising air pollution.
Officials explained that the model works by using real-time air quality data from across Punjab and combines it with international forecasting techniques. This integration allows the system to predict pollution trends more effectively, giving authorities the ability to respond quickly to worsening air conditions, especially during smog season.
Environmental experts and academics attending the session welcomed the development, saying it would support evidence-based policymaking. They noted that timely health advisories and quick preventive steps would now be possible, reducing the harmful effects of pollution on public health. The committee also recommended benchmarking the new model against international systems to ensure accuracy and global compatibility.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Deputy Director Dr. Farieha, Data Analyst Fahad Ahmad from the Strategy & Analysis Wing, Dr. Nusrat Naz of EPA Punjab, Dr. Derk Bekker of FCCU, Dr. Zaeem bin Babar from Punjab University, Dr. Umar Farooq from UET Lahore, Dr. Hammad from PCSIR Laboratories, and other representatives from government and partner institutions.
After detailed discussions, the committee approved the five-day AQI forecast system with suggestions for further refinement. Officials stressed that this model will be a vital tool in combating Punjab’s persistent smog problem and in addressing long-term challenges to air quality across the province.
