Pakistan has been cautioned by India about the risk of severe flooding in the Sutlej River.
The Ministry of Water Resources confirmed that the Indian High Commission in Pakistan has formally shared information about possible flooding. Authorities said severe flooding is expected downstream of Harike and Ferozepur starting from 8 am on September 1, and alerts have been issued to all concerned institutions.
High Alert in Punjab Districts
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority Punjab has declared a high alert in nine districts that are likely to face the impact of the flood wave. These include Kasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, and Pakpattan, along with Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Muzaffargarh.
Officials said water released from India into downstream areas of the Sutlej and related channels could intensify the flood situation. The PDMA has directed deputy commissioners of all sensitive districts to complete safety arrangements immediately. Relief teams and rescue agencies have also been instructed to remain on standby. Authorities urged residents of low-lying and vulnerable areas to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks or flooded streams. Preparations are being made to provide timely evacuations, shelter, and medical assistance if required.
