The federal government has announced that the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will convene in Peshawar to sight the Ramadan moon, with the goal of ensuring a unified start to the holy month across Pakistan.
A key meeting on February 28, 2025, aims to resolve regional differences in moon sighting that have caused varying dates for Ramadan and Eid, particularly between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other provinces.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs announced that Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad will chair the session, with zonal committees holding separate meetings. However, the central committee will make the final decision. Holding the meeting in Peshawar is expected to build consensus among scholars for a unified observance nationwide.
Meanwhile, Lahore is preparing for Ramadan by setting up 10 model bazaars to offer essential goods at discounted rates. Supervised by the district administration, these markets will provide fruits, vegetables, spices, and meat. Special counters will cater to women, senior citizens, and regular customers.
Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza, who led a preparatory meeting, stressed that this initiative will improve access to quality goods and ease shopping during the holy month.
