Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar confirmed that Sialkot received 512 millimetres of rainfall in the last 48 hours, leading to urban flooding and overflow from three main drains in the city.
Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar said this is the first time Sialkot has experienced flooding on such a large scale. She confirmed that rescue boats were used to evacuate residents from urban areas and added that maximum support is being provided to affected families. The district administration has set up nine relief camps, though many residents are hesitant to leave their homes. One camp received 25 families, but relatives later took in most. The DC said water levels in the River Chenab have now slightly decreased, reducing the immediate threat.
Meanwhile, operations at Sialkot International Airport were temporarily suspended from 10 am to 10 pm on Wednesday due to floodwater breaching a protective embankment on the southern side. According to the airport spokesperson, the runway, terminal, and parking area remain safe. All equipment is secure, and staff and machinery have been mobilized to drain the water. A NOTAM was issued to alert airlines and relevant authorities. Authorities earlier declared a public holiday in Gujrat and Sialkot districts as flooding intensified. Heavy inflows from India into the Sutlej and Chenab rivers have raised water levels, prompting a high alert across Punjab.
