In a bid to promote healthy eating habits among students, the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has issued a directive to educational institutions including schools in the province, urging them to ban the sale of unhealthy and junk food items on their premises.
In a recent move to improve student health, authorities have enforced strict measures to limit the availability of junk food in and around educational institutions.
The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has directed schools and colleges to stop selling fried items, soft drinks, and energy drinks in canteens. This step aims to protect students’ health and well-being. The SFA has reminded school administrations to monitor food courts and ensure full compliance, as per the original notification issued back in 2018.
In a similar step, the Peshawar administration has placed a temporary ban on the sale of junk food near schools. The restriction applies within a 150-meter radius and has been implemented under Section 144 for the next 30 days. The decision is intended to reduce students’ access to unhealthy snacks during school hours.
Vendors found selling substandard food items like chips and similar snacks will face legal action. This move is part of a wider health plan aiming to promote the availability of safe and nutritious food.
The Sindh Food Authority, operating under the SFA Act of 2016, is responsible for regulating and inspecting food businesses across the province. The authority regularly checks food quality and ensures rules are followed by all food sellers.
The SFA also works alongside national and international organisations to raise awareness about healthy eating and make sure nutritious options are accessible across Sindh.
These latest actions reflect a growing concern about the impact of poor diets on children’s health and show a commitment to fostering healthier eating habits in schools.
