Sindh okays Rs33.7 billion plan to upgrade fire services

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, chairing a provincial cabinet meeting, approved a Rs33.7 billion package to modernise the province’s firefighting and emergency response system and introduce a new ‘Early Warning Public Alert System.’

The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah at the CM House. Under the project, authorities will purchase 100 fire tenders, 35 water bowsers, special snorkels, 50 all-terrain fire vehicles, eight firefighting drones, and 12 multi-purpose drones. In addition, the government will introduce a new early-warning public alert system to improve communication during emergencies.

Importantly, the public alert system will operate through a multi-layered, technology-based framework. It will send quick notifications to citizens during natural disasters, health emergencies, and other urgent situations. As a result, authorities expect faster response times and better public awareness. The project will be implemented over three fiscal years and will cover equipment procurement, infrastructure development, and human resource strengthening.

Furthermore, the cabinet approved the modernization of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority and the Sindh Emergency Rescue Service 1122 to ensure coordinated and efficient emergency operations. To facilitate the process, the cabinet also allowed engagement with the Chinese Consulate under a government-to-government arrangement to source specialized vehicles and equipment. Meanwhile, the chief minister formed a high-level committee, including the home minister, to oversee the reorganization of Sindh’s rescue services.

Officials believe that these reforms will significantly enhance the province’s ability to respond to fires, floods, accidents, and other crises. Overall, the initiative reflects the Sindh government’s commitment to building a modern, reliable, and well-equipped emergency response system to protect lives and property.
