An employee of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) has committed suicide in an area of Abbottabad after he was laid off by the government.
He had served at the store for 13 years before being abruptly terminated. The federal government recently dismissed 3000 daily-wage employees, ordering them to vacate their positions immediately.
This decision has sparked countrywide protests by workers’ unions, demanding job reinstatement and the reopening of closed stores. Union leaders have warned of sit-ins in Islamabad if their concerns are not addressed.
The layoffs followed the government’s decision to withdraw subsidies, leading to the closure of 446 Utility Stores, mostly in rural areas. Reports suggest more shutdowns are expected, targeting loss-making outlets. Last year, a proposal to close 500 additional stores was already under discussion.
In August 2024, the government discontinued subsidies on key items such as flour, sugar, and cooking oil due to financial constraints. Officials argue that these restructuring measures aim to reduce financial losses, but concerns over job security continue to rise.
