Punjab introduces new motorcycle rule for basant

Lahore is gearing up to host a three-day Basant festival from February 6 to 8, and city officials have rolled out a set of strict safety measures, including a rule that will directly affect motorcyclists.

Authorities are taking strict measures to ensure the festival is safe for everyone, especially motorcyclists. One major step requires all motorcycles to have safety rods during the event, and those without them will not be allowed on city roads. To facilitate this, officials plan to set up 100 road safety camps across Lahore, aiming to install safety rods on around one million motorcycles.

Each camp is expected to fit safety rods on 50,000 to 60,000 motorcycles daily. These measures are part of the Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, which regulates festival activities and ensures public safety. Until February 6, kite flying remains banned, while the manufacturing of kites and related materials will only be permitted within Lahore district. Sales of kites will start on February 1 and continue until February 8.

Authorities have emphasized that only registered manufacturers, traders, and sellers holding valid no-objection certificates will be allowed to operate. Commissioner Maryam Khan urged associations and citizens to cooperate with the rules, emphasizing that any violations will face strict action. So far, 204 cases have been registered against illegal kite flying, highlighting the authorities’ zero-tolerance approach.

In addition to promoting safety, these steps aim to allow everyone to enjoy Basant without risks. The coordinated effort between police, district administration, and kite flying associations ensures a smooth and secure festival. With clear regulations and proactive measures, Lahore is set to host a responsible and lively Basant celebration this year.
