The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues unabated with Kyiv now getting boost of American-made F-16 fighter jets, a mainstay of NATO and global air forces for 50 years, which are now being deployed to Ukraine as part of support from the West.
The development comes a year after US President Joe Biden pledged over 60 F-16s to Ukraine, though deliveries will be gradual.
These single-engine supersonic multirole fighter jets will boost Ukraine’s air defense by intercepting Russian missiles and drones, neutralizing enemy air defenses, and attacking Russian positions. Despite the cheering moment, these jets will not be able to change the war scenario.
With the arrival, challenges for Ukraine persist including relatively short pilot training period, the need for extensive support infrastructure, and the potential hesitance of inexperienced pilots.
On the other hand, Kremlin is likely to target these jets aggressively, both on the ground and in the air, making protection and strategic deployment crucial.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged Ukraine still needs more trained pilots and additional F-16 jets. He remains hopeful about the arrival of more aircraft and ongoing training efforts.
He emphasized need for expanded training programs and highlighted the challenge posed by Russia’s advanced and numerous fleet. He also plans to push for NATO and neighboring countries to help intercept Russian missiles targeting Ukraine, despite concerns about potential escalation.
