Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) instructed all its players, staff and team management to continue with the upcoming Pakistan-hosted tri-nation series after sources earlier said that at least eight players would be returning home due to security concerns.
The board stated that if any player or staff member decides to return home, replacements will be sent immediately to ensure that the tour continues smoothly. Earlier, several Sri Lankan players had expressed their desire to return home after a suicide bombing occurred in Islamabad during the first ODI.
However, the cricket board assured them that their security concerns are being fully addressed in coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and relevant authorities. The SLC also warned that any player or staff member who leaves the tour despite the directive will face a formal review, and appropriate action will be taken afterward. Reports suggested that players who abandon the tour midway could face a two-year ban, according to sources within the Sri Lankan board.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with the Sri Lankan High Commissioner and team management to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to providing full security to the visiting players. He emphasized that the government has ensured foolproof arrangements for the team’s safety throughout their stay. The PCB expressed gratitude toward the Sri Lankan team for their decision to continue the tour, calling it a reflection of true sportsmanship and solidarity.
Despite earlier uncertainty, the ODI series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will proceed as scheduled. The second match will be played tomorrow in Rawalpindi, followed by the final ODI on November 16. Afterward, both teams will take part in a tri-nation series featuring Zimbabwe.
