The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has allowed VPN registration linked to mobile numbers to benefit freelancers and simplify the process for the IT industry.
In a statement, PTA highlighted that over 31000 VPNs have already been registered.
Users can now easily register their VPNs using mobile numbers through the PTA website.
This decision aligns with efforts to enhance cybersecurity while addressing the needs of professionals using VPNs for legitimate purposes.
Previously, the PTA had set a registration deadline of November 30 but later chose not to block unregistered VPNs, giving users more time to comply.
The Ministry of Interior had also announced plans to disable unregistered VPNs by mid-November but extended a two-week grace period for registration.
PTA Chairman Maj Gen (Retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman assured that no VPNs would be blocked as the government prioritized enabling the registration process rather than enforcing immediate restrictions.
This step aims to balance security concerns with the convenience of IT users in Pakistan.
