The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken a significant step towards launching 5G in the country.
On Monday, the PTA announced that it had received five proposals from international consultants to oversee the 5G spectrum auction. This marks a critical milestone in Pakistan’s journey towards next-generation mobile services.
The five international consultants vying for the role are Aetha Consulting Limited, Detecon Consulting FZ-LLC, Frontier Economics Limited, KomKonsult (Private) Limited, and the National Economic Research Associates Inc.
The PTA will now evaluate these bids to ensure the best partner is selected for this crucial task. The auction is expected to be completed within the ongoing fiscal year.
Industry concerns on 5G auction
Industry leaders have voiced concerns about the auction’s timing despite the progress. They question whether Pakistan is ready for a 5G rollout, especially with existing challenges in the 4G sector. Issues like “digital load-shedding,” where services are suspended during power outages, add to the skepticism.
The auction process has also sparked debates within the government. The IT ministry is eager to release spectrum at low rates to encourage growth, while the finance ministry pushes for intense competition to maximize revenue. The outcome of these debates will shape the future of 5G in Pakistan.
As the PTA moves forward with the auction, the eyes of the nation are on the potential of 5G to revolutionize connectivity. However, the road ahead is filled with challenges, and only time will tell if Pakistan is ready to embrace this next leap in technology.
