The Election Commission of Pakistan has finally announced the date for general elections in Pakistan. There had been a lot of upset in the general public alongside the Cabinet and government about the approval of elections and the announcement of the date.
According to sources, a party of 3 people was headed by the CJP regarding the announcement of election dates by the ECP. There had been a lot of tension in the country and political uprising as well as the annulment of assemblies occurred in early August.
After that, according to the Constitution of Pakistan, if the assemblies are dissolved, the general elections are to be held in the next 90 days. However, it’s been quite some time and general elections have not been held after that and the caretaker government has been under a lot of pressure.
Date of Elections
At the party’s hearing it was announced that the General Elections will be held from Feb 11, 2024. On Thursday, The Chief Justice of Pakistan had accused the President, Arif Alvi of violating the constitution because He did not give the dates of the Elections after the time period of 90 days passed away.
In the meeting, Ali Zafar, PTI’s Lawyer had announced that PTI just wants the elections to be held as the elections were supposed to be held after 90 days. CJP said that there will be no parliament if there are no elections.
Moreover, after this a letter was brought up which was sent by the President of Pakistan. The letter was regarding the general elections. The letter contained statements regarding the President of Pakistan and consultations with ECP for elections.
Upon this, Ali Zafar stated that the President of Pakistan has a legal and constitutional duty to announce elections after the dissolution of assemblies and henceforth there are no consultations required for this purpose.
