Pakistan’s performance hasn’t been upto the mark in this world cup. Green shirts have played 6 games so far, winning the first two. However, they’ve only headed downwards after that as they’ve lost the next 4 matches in a row. But, Pakistan can still qualify for the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup 2023 and here’s how.
For Pakistan to Qualify for Semis
The Pakistani team is still confident in their ability. Their next 3 matches are very crucial. The team is all set to play against Bangladesh, England, and New Zealand. They will need to win all 3 of their next matches but even that just isn’t enough.
Pakistan’s hopes and dreams now lie on the results of other matches in the world cup. One of the easiest paths for Pakistan to qualify would be for Australia to lose 3 of their 4 upcoming matches. However, the probability of that happening is very low as some of these matches are against weaker teams and it’s unlikely for Australia to lose 3 of their 4 upcoming matches.
Besides winning the match against New Zealand, Pakistan would also want New Zealand to win all 3 of their upcoming matches. This way, if Australia doesn’t lose their matches against the weaker teams of the world cup, and New Zealand beats them, then Net Run Rate (NRR) could come into effect.
Scenario for Pakistan to Qualify
The scenario for Pakistan’s qualification is a tough one to say the least. For Pakistan to qualify, India needs to win all of its upcoming matches. Australia either needs to lose 3 of the 4 matches and Pakistan needs to win the next 3 matches. Moreover, if that doesn’t happen, then New Zealand needs to win all 3 of their next matches, this way even if Australia doesn’t lose against weaker teams, New Zealand would defeat them.
If this wishful scenario takes place, India would end up with 18 points. New Zealand would have 14 points while South Africa would be standing with 12 points and lastly Pakistan would have 10 points. Both Australia and Sri Lanka will have 8 points each. However, if Australia wins the 43rd match of the CWC 23 against Bangladesh, Pakistan and Australia will have a tie as both teams will be standing at 10 points each.
However, this does seem like a long shot for Pakistan and things will get clearer as the World Cup progresses.
