WhatsApp, and Facebook to remain disrupted in Pakistan throughout August?

Social sites in Pakistan are facing unannounced disruptions, causing widespread inconvenience for netizens. This issue has continued for several days, impacting all internet service providers.

WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms are particularly affected, with users having trouble even downloading audio messages. Although internet service providers have attributed the disruptions to issues with social media platforms, mobile companies have denied any responsibility.

Amid the worsening situation, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not responded to clarify the reason behind the disruption. Pakistani government is reportedly advancing a new regulatory framework for over-the-top (OTT) services, led by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

This framework will regulate various platforms including communication services like WhatsApp and Facebook, Twitter and other online services like gaming and e-commerce. Services will be categorized into communication, application, and non-broadcasting groups.

The regulations, guided by existing laws such as the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and the PEMRA Ordinance, will require platforms to comply with local laws and obtain licenses within 12 months if approved. The joint oversight by the PTA and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) aims to enhance management of the digital landscape, aligning services with national security and interests. Final Cabinet approval is pending.

The ongoing work on new firewall may also be contributing to internet disruptions. Sources suggest that these service issues might persist until August 30th.
