Karachi on Tuesday topped the global pollution ranking with an unhealthy air quality level.
Karachi’s air quality remains unhealthy, with particulate matter (PM) levels recorded at 179, according to the Air Quality Index. Despite clear skies, pollution continues to pose serious health risks. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 20.4°C. Light northern winds are blowing, and humidity is at 34%.
Experts warn that prolonged exposure to high pollution levels can lead to respiratory issues. They advise residents, especially children and the elderly, to limit outdoor activities. An AQI between 151 and 200 is considered unhealthy, while levels above 300 are extremely hazardous.
Pollution worsens in winter due to slower wind speeds, changes in wind direction, and lower temperatures. Cold air traps pollutants, causing them to settle closer to the ground and form a thick layer of smog. Authorities urge residents to take precautions, including wearing masks and avoiding peak pollution hours.
