Lahore, known globally as a hub for food with hundreds of restaurants, has recently gained attention for its food scene for all the wrong reasons.
Two young sisters lost their lives in Lahore after allegedly consuming loaded fries from a restaurant near Johar Town, raising serious concerns over food safety in the city. The tragic incident took place last weekend on August 15, when the children fell severely ill just hours after eating the meal. According to the family, the younger child, aged four, passed away on Monday morning at Sheikh Zayed Hospital, while her seven-year-old sister, who was under treatment at the Children’s Hospital, died the following day.
A third child in the family also developed health complications but survived after medical treatment. The children’s father shared his grief on social media, saying the loss was unimaginable and that he was not seeking financial compensation, only justice for his daughters. The family has filed an application for an FIR against the restaurant and submitted medical evidence to support their claims, but authorities have yet to take any noticeable action. The case has sparked outrage among citizens, with social media platforms flooded with demands for accountability and stricter checks on food outlets.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for strict enforcement of food safety laws in Lahore, a city famous for its cuisine but increasingly facing criticism over poor food hygiene. Many residents are calling for regular inspections and harsh penalties for restaurants found guilty of negligence. The tragic deaths of the two sisters have left the community shocked and mourning, with parents now questioning the safety of eateries across the city. The provincial food authority and local administration are under pressure to respond quickly to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
