Pakistanis are no strangers to slow internet services and outages and you need to be ready for the same situation an important video call or streaming your favorite show, only to find the internet crawling at a snail’s pace.
The cable, a crucial link connecting Pakistan to the global internet, will undergo repairs starting at 2:00 PM, and work may last up to eight hours. Internet service provider Nayatel warned that this maintenance is unavoidable, although the exact cause and location of the fault were not disclosed. During this period, browsing, streaming, online work, and other digital services may be significantly affected.
Submarine cables carry most of Pakistan’s international data traffic, so any disruption can slow down services nationwide. Although data will be rerouted through alternative paths, users should still expect reduced internet speeds. This repair comes just weeks after a major outage on January 1, 2026, which disrupted services for over two days due to a fault at an upstream internet provider. The incident caused frustration among millions of users relying on stable connections for work, education, and communication.
Pakistan, with a population of around 242 million, depends on a limited number of submarine cables for global connectivity. Experts emphasize that regular maintenance is essential to prevent larger disruptions, even though it may temporarily inconvenience users. Nayatel and other internet providers are urging citizens to plan important online tasks ahead of the maintenance window. Completing work before 2:00 PM on January 15 can help minimize the impact.
