Sindh Police are taking a much tougher stance against drivers who operate vehicles without number plates.
Inspector General (IG) Sindh Javed Alam Odho has announced that such offenders will now face not only challans but also full criminal cases in Karachi. Speaking at a press conference, the IG claimed that a big drive is being launched against any form of traffic-rule violations in the city.
The Safe City surveillance system is used to identify lawbreakers using CCTV cameras that are mounted at strategic points. The government will particularly crack down on the habitual violators of traffic regulations or resort to illegal methods like concealment, removal or destruction of their number plates to evade e-challans.
The IG also revealed that the cameras installed in Karachi have gone up to 40000 cameras, which have enhanced the monitoring network in Karachi, which earlier had 30000 cameras. The police are currently advising traders and business owners to come up with their own cameras to supplement the surveillance system.
According to Odho, CCTV footage has helped solve about 70 percent of crime cases in the city, while incidents of extortion have also significantly dropped. The IG further stated that the Karachi extortion groups are still being dealt with by the police. Some of the suspects who are believed to be outside the country have been given red warrants and the police are likely to apprehend them soon.
