Basant Buzz: 400000 kites sold in Lahore on day one

The buying and selling of kites and strings has reached its peak across Punjab, especially in Lahore, as preparations for the Basant festival gain momentum.

Markets across the city are witnessing heavy crowds, with traders reporting strong demand and record sales. According to representatives of the Kite Flying Association, sales surged sharply from the first day of the festival buildup. Around 400,000 kites were sold on the opening day alone, while nearly 15,000 spools of kite string were purchased during the same period. As a result, business activity has increased significantly in major kite markets.

Meanwhile, kite prices vary depending on size and quality. Large kites are selling for around Rs 500, medium-sized kites for Rs 300, and smaller ones for approximately Rs 200. Similarly, prices of kite string have also climbed due to high demand. Standard-quality spools are being sold between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000, while premium varieties are fetching prices ranging from Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000.

In addition, traders estimate that the festival has already generated massive revenue. Sales of large kites have contributed nearly Rs 100 million, while medium and small kites have added Rs 30 million and Rs 10.5 million respectively. Overall, kite sales alone have crossed Rs 150 million. Furthermore, string sales have brought in an additional Rs 80 million, pushing total earnings to impressive levels. At the same time, commercial activity continues at full pace in popular areas such as Mochi Gate, Islampura, Sanda, Samanabad, Ichhra, and surrounding localities. Shopkeepers expect sales to rise further as Basant approaches.
