K-Electric exempts several Karachi areas from power cuts

In a major development, K-Electric has announced load-shedding exemptions for key business areas in Karachi, including Jama Cloth Market and Burns Road.

K-Electric has announced further progress in its plan to make Karachi a load-shedding-free city by 2030. The company confirmed that 70 percent of its service areas are now exempt from power outages, thanks to quarterly reviews, improved bill recovery, and smart surveillance. According to a spokesperson, the exemption was made possible through joint efforts between the company and consumers. Timely bill payments and reduced electricity theft have played a major role in ensuring uninterrupted supply. The spokesperson added that areas showing better recovery and lower theft ratios will continue to benefit from load-shedding relief, while those with poor recovery and higher theft could face more outages.

K-Electric is actively working to eliminate electricity theft across the city. In the current fiscal year alone, the company removed more than 330,000 kilograms of illegal connections. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to transform Karachi’s power infrastructure and ensure stable supply for its residents. The company also plans to expand investments in smart grid technologies and network upgrades to improve efficiency and reliability. With this approach, K-Electric aims to gradually eliminate power cuts across the city, making Karachi 90 percent load-shedding-free by the end of this decade.

In addition to tackling outages, the company has also introduced a redesigned electricity bill format. The new layout consolidates billing information and calculations in one place, making it easier for consumers to understand. The spokesperson clarified that while the bill format has changed, there are no alterations to the tariff or slab structure. K-Electric maintains that collaboration with consumers will remain the key to sustaining Karachi’s progress toward uninterrupted electricity.
