India moves closer to nuclear fuel self-reliance with new reactor

India has moved closer to producing its own nuclear fuel after a domestically designed reactor began a controlled nuclear reaction, an important step before it can start generating power.

The energy-hungry giant, home to 1.4 billion people and the third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, aims to skyrocket nuclear capacity from 8 gigawatts today to 100 by 2047. This surge promises reliable power and slashes coal dependence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated a milestone. The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam achieved criticality, a vital point where nuclear chain reactions sustain themselves. Modi called it a game-changer in India’s nuclear story, kicking off the program’s second phase.

This cutting-edge reactor generates extra fuel while running. It highlights India’s top-notch science and engineering talent. Modi praised it as the gateway to unlock massive thorium reserves, a game-changing fuel source right at home. The PFBR does not yet pump electricity to the national grid.

Teams will advance it to full operation soon. When ready, it will deliver clean, efficient power. Global tensions add urgency. Middle East conflicts disrupt fuel flows, hitting importers hard. India leans on coal for over 70% of electricity but commits to net zero by 2070. Nuclear steps like this bridge the gap.

Breeder reactors work magic: they convert non-fissile uranium-238 into plutonium-239, fueling endless cycles. India’s strategy unfolds in three phases starting with heavy water tech, shifting to breeders, and culminating in thorium mastery. The 500-MW PFBR blazes the trail.

This success strengthens energy independence. It shields against supply shocks and combats warming. India builds a brighter, self-powered future Atmanirbhar in energy too.
