INDIA – In a shocking turn of events, Qatar had convicted 8 Indian Navy Personnel of espionage and spying on their submarine project and given them death sentences.
The news came in December of 2023, as Qatar stated that Indian retired Navy personnel have been found guilty of spying for Israel.
These personnel were part of a secret mission and were found guilty of spying for the Israeli government as per Qatari sources.
After their death sentence was announced, the Indian PM Modi met with the Qatari officials and soon after the personnel were released.
The news came as hope for the Indian people as 7 out of the 8 convicted individuals returned safely to India on Monday.
The navy officials included Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purenendu Tiwari, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, and Sailor Ragesh.
According to Indian Media, these personnel were a part of the Dahra Global Technologies. This is a consulting company and they were tasked with advising Qatar.
Qatar was enroute to acquire stealth submarines from Italy that could evade radar detection and could be ideal for spying.
However, these personnel were found guilty of leaking information upon which they were arrested and charged with espionage.
The Indian Consul General wrote on their official X account, “The Indian National Congress joins the entire nation in its relief and happiness that the eight former Indian Navy personnel earlier sentenced to death by a court in Qatar have been released and are back home”.
