Kirsty Coventry smashed through the International Olympic Committee’s glass ceiling on Thursday to become the organization’s first female and first African president in its 130-year history.
The Zimbabwean swimming legend secured 49 out of 97 votes in the first round, defeating Spain’s Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., who received 28 votes, and Britain’s Sebastian Coe, who got eight.
Coventry, a seven-time Olympic medalist, is the first African and first female to lead the IOC. Despite concerns over her role in Zimbabwe’s government, she gained strong support from IOC members. Her victory signals a new era for the Olympic movement, with expectations that she will focus on athlete rights, gender equality, and sustainability.
She has pledged to expand Olympic participation and keep the Games relevant for younger generations. Managing relations with global sports federations and sponsors while maintaining financial stability will be among her biggest challenges. The world now watches as she shapes the future of the IOC.
