US President Donald Trump has minimized concerns over rising tensions between Pakistan and India, stating that the dispute between the nuclear-armed neighbors will be resolved, one way or another.
President Trump was asked about the growing tensions, and he referred to the long-standing conflict over the Kashmir region. Trump acknowledged the historical tensions but remained hopeful that the situation would eventually be resolved.Kashmir has been a source of conflict between India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. Both countries claim the region in full, but they each control separate portions. Insurgency groups have fought for independence or to merge with Pakistan since 1989.The violence escalated this week when gunmen killed 26 male tourists in Pahalgam, a town in Kashmir.
In response, India suspended a key water-sharing treaty with Pakistan, closed the main border crossing, downgraded diplomatic ties, and revoked visas for Pakistani nationals. Pakistan rejected India’s accusations of involvement in the attack, calling them baseless.Indian and Pakistani forces exchanged gunfire at the Line of Control on Friday, heightening the already tense situation. While Trump acknowledged the longstanding tensions, he did not offer any direct involvement in resolving the conflict.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is working behind the scenes to prevent further escalation. A senior Saudi official confirmed that the Kingdom is in talks with both India and Pakistan to reduce tensions. Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan has already spoken separately with both Indian and Pakistani leaders in an effort to defuse the crisis.
