Zimbabwe secured their place in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after defeating Kenya by seven wickets in the Africa Qualifier semi-final.
Chasing a modest target of 123, Zimbabwe’s openers Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani wasted no time and smashed 70 runs in the powerplay, putting their team in complete control within the first six overs. Bennett continued his fine form, scoring a blistering 51 off just 25 balls with eight boundaries and a six. Marumani also played his part before falling, while skipper Sikandar Raza could not stay until the end. However, Ryan Burl and Tony Munyonga calmly finished the chase in the 15th over, securing an emphatic victory.
With this win, Zimbabwe joined Namibia and South Africa as Africa’s representatives for next year’s global event. Namibia had earlier confirmed qualification by defeating Tanzania. This result also means that 17 of the 20 teams for the 2026 T20 World Cup are now confirmed, with only three spots remaining to be decided through the Asian qualifiers. For Zimbabwe, this qualification marks a strong comeback after missing out on the 2024 edition. Their progress highlights renewed strength in the shorter format and adds momentum as they prepare to face the world’s best next year.
Qualified teams so far include India and Sri Lanka as hosts, along with Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, USA, and West Indies through the 2024 T20 World Cup performance. Ireland, Pakistan, and New Zealand qualified via ICC rankings, while Canada, Netherlands, Italy, Zimbabwe, and Namibia secured their places through regional qualifiers. Zimbabwe’s success has brought joy to fans who see this achievement as a fresh chapter in the team’s cricket journey.
