The Punjab Assembly (PA) on Tuesday unanimously approved a vital resolution to include a person’s blood group on their Identity Card.
The move aims to make emergency medical treatment faster and more efficient for people during accidents and critical health situations. The resolution, presented by MPA Ahmed Iqbal Chaudhry, highlights that knowing a patient’s blood group at the right time can save lives. He noted that during serious accidents and sudden emergencies, hospitals and blood banks often face delays because the patient’s blood type is not immediately available. This situation can become life-threatening when urgent transfusions are needed.
According to the resolution, adding blood group details to the ID card will help doctors quickly arrange the required blood, reducing delays and increasing the chances of survival for injured or critically ill patients. The step has been welcomed as a public-safety measure and a practical improvement in emergency medical response. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), which issues identity cards to citizens in Pakistan and abroad, may now consider changes to the card format based on this approved resolution.
Once implemented, citizens’ blood group information will be officially recorded and printed on the ID card, making it easily accessible when needed. Authorities believe this initiative will support hospitals, emergency services, and rescue workers by giving them essential medical information without wasting time on tests. The resolution reflects growing efforts to modernize identification systems and improve public health support across the province.
