Earthquake jolts parts of Punjab including Lahore

An earthquake struck several areas of Pakistan on Tuesday, with tremors felt in Swat, Peshawar, Chitral, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.

People rushed out of their homes and workplaces as the jolts spread across multiple areas. The earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in the Hindukush mountain range. The National Seismological Centre reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 190 kilometers, which helped prevent severe surface damage. Authorities have not reported any casualties or major structural damage so far.

However, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to remain alert and follow safety measures in case of aftershocks. Officials advised people to avoid unstable buildings, stay away from falling objects, and move to open spaces until the situation stabilizes. Seismologists noted that the Hindukush region is part of an active tectonic zone, making it prone to frequent earthquakes. They warned that aftershocks could follow the initial tremor, emphasizing the need for caution in affected areas.

Residents reported brief disturbances in electricity and communication services in some districts, but officials said these issues were quickly resolved. Schools and workplaces in affected regions took precautionary steps by temporarily evacuating people to open areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are coordinating with local disaster management teams to ensure public safety. They also stressed the importance of preparedness, including having emergency kits and knowing safe evacuation routes, especially in earthquake-prone regions. Overall, while the tremors caused widespread alarm, the timely response of authorities and the depth of the quake prevented major damage, but residents remain on alert for potential aftershocks in the coming hours.
