In today’s meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information Technology, NTC officials briefed the committee about the plan to establish 30 free Wi-Fi hotspots in Islamabad.
Officials explained that the project is a key part of the government’s wider policy to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and expand access to high-speed internet. As part of this initiative, free hotspots will be installed near major public locations, busy markets and important government buildings so that citizens, students and visitors can easily connect to reliable internet services.
Moreover, NTC informed the committee that it is already providing telecommunication and cyber security services to more than 3,000 government and private institutions in over 100 cities across Pakistan. The organization added that its network is continuously expanding to meet the rising demand for secure and stable communication services across different sectors.
According to officials, the free Wi-Fi project will play a major role in supporting digital inclusion and helping Islamabad move towards becoming a more technology-friendly city. They said that the availability of free and fast internet will benefit students preparing for exams, small businesses that rely on online tools and general citizens who need regular access to digital platforms for services such as banking, e-governance and education.
Furthermore, authorities stated that the project aligns with the government’s long-term goal of creating smart cities, where technology supports economic activity and improves the quality of life. They emphasized that the introduction of these hotspots will not only promote digital literacy but also encourage greater public use of online services. Work on the installation is ongoing, and officials expect further updates as the project progresses toward completion.
