Finland raises financial requirements for Schengen Visa

HELSINKI – Tourists visiting Finland will face increased financial demands, as the authorities have confirmed a surge in the required daily expense to EUR 50 for individuals staying in the country.

This change for the Schengen Visa, announced by Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marks a significant change from the previous requirement of EUR 30 and has been attributed to the escalating cost of living in the country.

The revised financial threshold, applicable to short-term stays not exceeding 90 days, comes alongside the implementation of Article 14.4 of the EU’s Visa Code, the latter bringing forth a maintenance and accommodation agreement.

Under the new guidelines, a proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form will be introduced. This form will allow visa applicants to utilize funds provided by their sponsors or hosts during their visit to Finland, in a major relief to those visiting the country.

Moreover, Finnish citizens or residents possessing a valid residence permit will have the opportunity to financially support visa applicants. They can do so by filling out the proof of sponsorship form, which is to be submitted along with other necessary documents for obtaining the visa.

It’s crucial to note that financial requirements vary among European Union member states. For example, Belgium maintains a daily threshold of €45, which escalates to €95 for individuals staying in hotels or similar accommodations.

Finland, situated in Northern Europe, shares borders with Sweden, Norway, and Russia, while it is also defined by the Baltic Sea to the southwest. With a population of approximately 5.5 million people, Finland boasts stunning natural landscapes including forests, thousands of lakes, and the Northern Lights.
