BEIRUT – Beirut airport on Sunday came under a cyber-attack as anti-Hezbollah messages had replaced screen displays at its terminal.
According to media reports, the message displayed at the airport urged the influential Iran-backed Hezbollah group to refrain from dragging the country into war, a reference to the escalation with Israel.
As per Lebanon’s National News Agency, a cyber-attack on the airport’s departure and arrival screens led to a disruption in the BHS (Baggage Handling System) baggage inspection system.
“Hassan Nasrallah, no one will support you if you drag the country into the war,” the message on the screen read.
“We will not fight on behalf of anyone,” it read.
Moreover, images circulated by local media showcased the message criticizing Hezbollah, appearing onscreen alongside the emblem of the Christian group “Soldiers of God.”
Furthermore, the airport message cautioned against introducing weapons that could jeopardize the airport’s safety, urging the liberation of the airport from the influence of the Hezbollah entity.
The latest reports confirmed that the airport screens returned to normal and flight operations continued as usual despite the hacking incident.
The killing of Hamas’s deputy leader in Hezbollah’s southern Beirut stronghold on Tuesday, as indicated by a US defense official to be carried out by Israel, has sparked concerns of a potential escalation.
Lebanon’s relationship with Hezbollah is complex as the latter holds influence in Lebanon’s government. It emerged to resist Israeli occupation, but its dual role as a political and military entity sparks ongoing domestic and international debates.
