PARIS – Europe’s most celebrated Louvre Museum is set to make a significant alteration to its entry fees, marking a staggering 29 percent increase starting from the new year.
The globally renowned cultural landmark in Paris is gearing up to raise its general admission prices from €17 ($18.30) to €22 ($23.70), effective January 15, 2024, a move which has sparked concerns among prospective visitors, especially those planning to attend the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Though the adjustment will be the first one since 2017, some say it is aimed at balancing increased operational costs while also facilitating complimentary entry for specific groups like journalists, educators, and individuals below the age of 18.
Notably, the Louvre Museum isn’t the only entity raising its ticket prices. Plans for heightened hotel tariffs and a proposed Metro fare surge from €2.10 to €4 (approximately $4.30) are also underway, potentially adding to the financial burden for tourists. Some estimates predict that the hostel prices would go up by 300 percent.
Louvre Museum President Laurence des Cars emphasized that these price adjustments form part of a broader strategy to rekindle interest among Parisian locals, potentially discouraged by the overwhelming tourist crowds.
“I am happy and proud to see the French public, from Ile-de-France and Paris, reclaiming the Louvre Museum. The quality of this relationship is at the heart of our mission. We are working to restore this ‘desire for the Louvre’ in our local public and try to open new doors for them,” said Laurence des Cars in a statement.
Efforts have been made this year to engage more with local audiences, with the daily visitor cap reduced to 30,000 from the pre-COVID allowance of 45,000.
