Balochistan enforces tough punishments for underage marriages

Balochistan has imposed stringent penalties on individuals involved in underage marriages.

The legislation defines a child as any person under the age of 18 and aims to curb underage marriages, which are often driven by poverty and cultural practices. Under the new law, anyone entering into a child marriage will face strict punishment, including two to three years in prison and a fine ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs300,000. In addition, individuals who facilitate, arrange, or encourage such marriages will also be liable to the same penalties.

This step aligns Balochistan with federal efforts to protect children, although legal age requirements have historically varied across Pakistan’s provinces. Previously, the federal Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929 set the minimum age at 16 for girls and 18 for boys. However, recent provincial laws and amendments have created an inconsistent legal framework across the country. Earlier this year, Islamabad Capital Territory and Sindh also banned child marriage by passing the ICT Child Marriage Restraint Bill, following approval from President Asif Zardari. These regions now enforce 18 as the minimum age for marriage, particularly for girls.

Experts note that banning child marriage is crucial for ensuring children’s rights, improving education opportunities, and preventing early pregnancies that threaten health. Authorities have emphasized the importance of public awareness alongside legal enforcement to ensure the law is effectively implemented.

Furthermore, the Balochistan government has urged citizens to report any violations of the law, saying that the new legislation will help protect children and promote social development in the province. With the passage of this law, Balochistan becomes the latest region in Pakistan to take a strong stance against child marriage.
