The federal cabinet is set to take key decisions today regarding the introduction of new currency notes and the possible launch of a Rs10 coin.
According to sources, the meeting will review recommendations prepared by a special committee formed under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The committee has proposed issuing newly designed banknotes of Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000 and Rs5000. Officials will present detailed suggestions during the cabinet session to ensure that the redesigned notes reach the public smoothly and on time.
The government aims to improve security features, enhance transparency, and modernize the currency system through these changes. In addition, the cabinet will discuss the proposal to introduce a Rs 10 coin and gradually phase out the existing Rs 10 banknote. Authorities believe that replacing the paper note with a coin could reduce printing costs and increase durability.
However, the final decision will depend on the committee’s detailed review and financial considerations. The agenda of the meeting also includes approval of the Hajj Policy 2027-30 along with other important committee decisions. Furthermore, officials are expected to decide when the new notes and coins will be issued and how long the current notes will remain in circulation.
Earlier, the cabinet had directed the committee to submit clear recommendations regarding both the new currency design and the Rs 10 denomination. Therefore, today’s meeting is likely to play a crucial role in shaping Pakistan’s future currency framework. Overall, these decisions aim to strengthen the financial system, improve convenience for citizens, and ensure a more efficient and secure currency structure across the country.
