CJP Afridi announces major judicial reforms

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has implemented transformative reforms to modernize the judiciary, aiming to establish it as a model institution that upholds fairness, transparency, and accessibility, while meeting standards for judicial excellence.

A significant step in this direction is the introduction of advanced information technology systems, including the e-Affidavit system, which simplifies the filing process, reduces delays, and ensures greater transparency. 

Furthermore, the Case Management System has been implemented to allow litigants and lawyers immediate access to certified case copies, eliminating traditional delays. To promote transparency and foster public trust, the judiciary has introduced feedback mechanisms for legal practitioners, litigants, and civil society members. 

These measures are part of a broader effort to make the justice system more citizen-centered and responsive to the needs of those involved in legal proceedings. Acknowledging the critical role of district courts, the CJP has visited remote and underserved districts to assess challenges and improve institutional capacity. These visits are designed to address resource gaps, guarantee equitable access to justice, and strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.

To ensure transparency in judicial appointments, the CJP has set up several committees to oversee the selection of key officials. These committees, comprising senior judges and the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP), will evaluate candidates for important roles, such as secretaries of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP), the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), and the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).

In a separate development, the Pakistan Bar Council elected Chaudhry Tahir Nasrullah Warraich as vice chairman for 2025, and Muhammad Tariq Afridi was elected as a member of its executive committee.
