A Paris court sentenced a Pakistani man to 30 years in prison on Thursday for attempting to kill two people outside the former offices of Charlie Hebdo in 2020 using a meat cleaver.
Originally from rural Pakistan, Mahmood entered France illegally in 2019. Influenced by the late Khadim Hussain Rizvi, founder of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan, Mahmood sought revenge after Charlie Hebdo republished controversial caricatures in 2020.
Testimony revealed Mahmood’s isolation in French society, as he neither spoke the language nor integrated beyond the Pakistani community. During the attack, Mahmood seriously injured two employees of the Premieres Lignes news agency.
Both victims, a 37-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, have not accepted his apologies, citing the deep physical and emotional scars left by the incident.
Five other Pakistani men, accused of supporting Mahmood, were also convicted and received sentences ranging from three to 12 years for their involvement in the conspiracy.
The attack took place shortly before the trial of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo massacre, which resulted in 12 deaths and triggered a series of extremist attacks in France. These incidents have heightened tensions surrounding religious freedom and extremism.
Following the completion of his sentence, Mahmood will be deported from France. The case highlights the ongoing challenges Europe faces in addressing extremism, societal integration, and the protection of civil liberties.
