KP – In alarming news, Nine cases of Covid-19, including two of the new JN.1 variant, have been found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Out of these nine cases, two are of the JN.1 variant and one is of the JN.1.8 variant. Six cases have been reported in Peshawar and three in Swat.
This has led health authorities to issue advisories and increase testing efforts across the province.
Dr. Arshad, the Director of Public Health, has instructed hospitals to boost testing for flu-like symptoms in response to the positive cases of the Covid-19 JN.1 variant in KP.
Hospitals have been told to send samples to the Public Health Reference Lab for genome testing.
After genome testing, it was unveiled that two new variants of Covid-19 have surfaced in Pakistan now, JN.1 and JN.8.
According to the World Health Organization, JN.1 transmits three times faster than the Covid-19.

What is JN.1 Covid Variant?
Sources suggest that a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 called BA.2.86 was identified, drawing attention from virologists due to its high number of mutations, almost 30.
This was thought to help it evade immunity better than other variants known at that time because of this reason.
Despite these concerns, BA.2.86 did not become the dominant variant among the group circulating in late 2023 because of its transmission.
However, a descendant of BA.2.86, known as the JN.1 variant, has emerged with the ability to spread more efficiently due to one or two additional mutations.
Now this variant has all the old properties and the worst part is that it transmits much faster and is immune to most things.
