The federal government has decided to introduce the Prime Minister’s Relief Package for the rehabilitation of flood victims through emergency funds allocated in the national budget.
According to official sources, Pakistan will formally request the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to approve the launch of this relief initiative. However, the IMF has asked Pakistan to submit detailed estimates of damages and essential needs caused by the floods before granting clearance. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has already submitted an initial estimate of Rs40–50 billion in damages, while Sindh has projected losses of around Rs40 billion. Punjab is expected to present its preliminary assessment shortly. All provincial governments have also agreed to mobilize additional revenues to support relief and rehabilitation activities.
Negotiations between Pakistan and the IMF have now entered their fifth day, with special sessions focusing on National Finance Commission (NFC) matters and the financial impact of floods. Senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan took part in the talks. During the briefing, it was informed that Balochistan did not experience major flood-related damages compared to other provinces.
On the sixth day of discussions, Punjab officials are scheduled to present a detailed assessment of damages and requirements. The IMF has emphasized the need for accurate data to finalize Pakistan’s request for emergency relief funding. The government hopes that the package will provide timely assistance to flood-affected communities, restore infrastructure, and support long-term rehabilitation. Officials believe that with IMF approval, the relief package will play a crucial role in rebuilding livelihoods and ensuring stability in flood-hit regions.
