Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered an apology to Qatar for the Doha strike, marking the first reported direct public contact between leaders of the two countries.
The apology, however, came with a clear distinction, as Netanyahu expressed regret for violating Qatar’s sovereignty but did not apologize for targeting Hamas. Netanyahu conveyed the apology by phone to the Qatari Prime Minister from the White House, where he was on an official visit. He also expressed condolences over the death of a Qatari security guard in the attack. Speaking in a later interview, Netanyahu stressed that Israel’s focus remained solely on Hamas and voiced hope for mutual understanding with Qatar on this issue.
Reports suggest that the apology was part of a broader arrangement designed to pressure Hamas into accepting the Trump administration’s 21-point peace plan. The development followed a phone call made earlier by President Trump to the Emir of Qatar before Netanyahu’s U.S. visit. The discussion centered on reviving Qatar’s role as a mediator in Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Analysts believe that Washington views Qatar as a crucial player due to its past involvement in regional diplomacy and links with various groups in Gaza.
While Israel and Qatar have previously engaged in secret talks, this incident marks the first public acknowledgment of direct communication at the leadership level. Observers suggest that this could open the door to more structured dialogue in the future, depending on how Hamas responds to the emerging peace framework.
