The Cabinet Division has officially announced that Thursday, August 14, will be a public holiday across Pakistan in connection with Independence Day celebrations.
The next day, Friday, August 15, will mark Chehlum. Although Chehlum is not part of the federal government’s official holiday list this year, provincial governments are expected to declare it a public holiday in major cities like Karachi and Rawalpindi, similar to last year. Due to Independence Day falling on Thursday and Chehlum on Friday, followed by the weekend, the public is likely to enjoy an unusual four-day break from August 14 to August 17.
Authorities have been directed to improve security for both events. Law enforcement agencies will increase deployment in sensitive areas to ensure peaceful Chehlum processions and safe Independence Day celebrations. Independence Day events across the country will include flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and public gatherings. Meanwhile, religious processions and gatherings will be held on Chehlum, especially in areas with large Shia communities.
Security arrangements are being planned to manage both crowds and traffic. Public and private institutions may also remain closed during the extended holiday period. The government has advised citizens to follow safety instructions and cooperate with law enforcement during processions and gatherings. Hospitals and emergency services will stay on high alert during these days.
