Google issues global cybersecurity warning for millions of Android users

Google has ended critical security support for older versions of its mobile operating system, posing a risk to more than one billion Android users worldwide.

Google has warned that millions of Android users worldwide face growing cyber risks because they are using outdated software. According to the company, nearly 40 percent of active Android smartphones may not be able to protect themselves against new and advanced cyber threats.

This warning came alongside Google’s latest Android update. The company explained that phones running Android 12 or older versions lack key security features needed to defend against modern attacks. As a result, only about 58 percent of Android devices currently in use can offer adequate protection during potential cyber incidents.

Meanwhile, recent data highlights the seriousness of the issue. As of December, the newest operating system, Android 16, was installed on only 7.5 percent of smartphones. In comparison, Android 15 was running on 19.3 percent of devices, Android 14 on 17.9 percent, and Android 13 on 13.9 percent. These figures clearly show that a large number of users still rely on older software.

Consequently, such devices become easier targets for hackers. Cybercriminals often exploit known weaknesses in unsupported systems, making outdated phones more vulnerable to malware, phishing, and data theft. Therefore, security experts strongly advise users to install updates as soon as they are available.

However, the problem runs deeper. Many older phones no longer qualify for major Android upgrades because manufacturers control update schedules. As a result, even well-functioning devices gradually lose security support, increasing long-term risks for users. Although Google has not reported any specific ongoing cyberattack, the warning serves as an important reminder. Users should regularly check their Android version and install updates whenever possible. If updates are no longer available, experts suggest considering newer devices that continue to receive security patches.
