The construction work on the long-awaited Karachi-Sukkur Motorway (M6) will start this year and the center is likely to invite the Sindh government to join the project, which will also connect the Karachi port.
Communications and Privatisation Minister Abdul Aleem Khan held a special departmental meeting on Wednesday to discuss the progress of the Karachi-Sukkur Motorway project. He revealed that the motorway will begin at Karachi Port and connect with the Sukkur Motorway.
The project is planned to be launched by the federal government through a public-private partnership (PPP). The Sindh government has been invited to participate, and discussions have already occurred between Minister Aleem and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. However, if a PPP partnership is not established, the federal government is ready to fully fund the project.
In the event that the private sector does not get involved, both the federal and Sindh governments may form a consortium to advance the project. Additionally, the original plan for the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway has been modified, with the new M6 motorway proposed to directly connect Karachi Port to Sukkur via Hyderabad.
Minister Aleem stressed that the Karachi-Sukkur Motorway will be a landmark project for Pakistan, particularly enhancing commercial goods transportation. He projected that the project would generate approximately Rs3 trillion in revenue over the next 25 years, highlighting its potential as a profitable venture for the country. The motorway’s construction is expected to significantly improve infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in the region.
