Punjab’s Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a report highlighting the damage caused by floods in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers.
According to Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed, 27 districts have been affected and more than 4700 villages have suffered severe flood damage. The floods have directly impacted over 4.7 million people. Authorities have set up 271 relief camps in affected areas to provide food, shelter, and basic facilities to displaced families. In addition, 300 medical camps are operating to ensure healthcare services, while 283 veterinary camps have been arranged for livestock. More than 2.117 million animals have already been shifted to safer places.
Rescue teams have so far evacuated 2.638 million people to safe locations. Despite these efforts, the floods have claimed 134 lives, while 13 others sustained injuries in different incidents. Officials also confirmed that standing crops on millions of acres and thousands of homes have been completely destroyed, leaving families without livelihoods. Commissioner Nabeel Javed assured that Punjab Chief Minister has directed immediate compensation for losses. A detailed damage assessment survey will begin on September 24, and compensation will be distributed through a transparent process.
The scale of the disaster is evident in tragic stories emerging from affected areas. In mouza Kak Shaal, an entire village has been buried under sand brought by floodwaters, leaving no homes, livestock, or tractors behind. Locals described the devastation as a nightmare, with communities left helpless.
Authorities blame torrential rains and water aggression from across the border for worsening the disaster. Relief operations are ongoing, but challenges remain immense as the province struggles to recover from Punjab’s deadliest flood in recent memory.
